Zhaleika
Zhaleika is the most commonly possessed and used Russian wind instrument. Because of this it also carries the nickname of "Russian Folk Clarinet". Zhaleika's design consists of a wooden pipe which is about 10-20 cm long with 3-7 finger holes, the reed made out either cane or goose feather and the bell which would be made out of cow horn or birch bark.
As you can hear in the video below Zhaleika is played with high frequency (pitch) and amplitude (volume) but also with short duration of sound to express and highlight the happiness and the powerful rhythm in music. Its tone colour is a strong, reedy, warm and wheezing sound, practically like a clarinet's.
