Traditional Percussion Spoons (loshkey)
It is impossible to guess who stumbled upon the idea of turning ordinary tablespoons into a percussion instrument, yet the fact is still there: they became the easiest, the most colourful and the most popular national instrument of Russian. The painted wooden spoons are beloved in this country, probably every single family in Russia would have at least a pair of these somewhere at home placed on a special shelf. But that the spoons are this popular in Russia doesn't mean the rest of the world doesn't like them, thousands of them are exported as souvenirs by both tourists and reseller companies.
What differs them from normal wooden spoons is that they are made out of harder wood, also elongated handles and polished and painted surface to make them beautiful and easier to play.
The tone colour of the wooden spoons is the wooden, bright and dry sound but with a tinge of a hollowness. The duration of the sound is short and the pitch is sombre but the sound still has a loud volume. This makes the spoons an ideal instrument for keeping rhythm but being still being able to play its own solo.
